This photo of a black officer helping a white man wearing a racist t-shirt to shade during a KKK rally in South Carolina has gone viral.

Leroy Smith, director of South Carolina’s public safety agency, said he was surprised this photo of him helping the unnamed man, who was suffering in the heat, had created such a reaction - but he is hoping it will be a catalyst for people to work toward overcoming hatred and violence.

“I hope this photo will be a catalyst for people to work to overcome some of the hatred and violence we have seen in our country in recent weeks,” he said.
